Mike Peterson is the author of "Tommy and the Guttersnipe" and other serialized newspaper stories. He is also a newspaper editor and has been a reporter and columnist, as well as a magazine writer, radio talkshow host and advertising copywriter.
I think it is so mean, what some people will do for money. The family spent a long time working up the money and some people fake a gold mine to spend that money. Some people still do anything for a dollar. Others won't give up any money, even when there is so much poverty in the world.
It was very smart of Dennis to pretend he had the actual dirt from the mine. He also tricked the man into thinking it was a silver mine. The kids also had a big part in tricking him too.
I'm not sure how much of the idea was Dennis's -- remember that it was Jake who asked if it was fair to cheat a cheater. Jake is a pretty clever little guy!
Remember, Tanner, that it wasn't even a "dried out" gold mine --it was just a worthless hole in the ground. The crook had scattered pieces of gold ore around to make Dennis think it had come from inside the mine, but it hadn't -- just like the silver ore Dennis showed him really came from Mr. McMahon's friend in Leadville, not from the mine either! But salting mines was a common way for thieves to steal money from people like Dennis who didn't know any better. I already knew a little bit about it, but I looked it up to make sure I was right (which is a good rule any time you're writing about history!).
None of the characters in the story are real, though the stores where the two fathers work were real and so is the store where Anna bought the thread. Each one of them is important to the story, just like characters in a play. For instance, even though Dennis only appears in this chapter (and the last one), there wouldn't be much of a story without him because you need a reason for Anna and the boys to be thinking about how to cheat the cheater and get the money back for her family. That's the "action" part of the story!
My 4th and 5th grade students at RVMS have been reading each chapter of "Anna's Story" and we are enjoying the adventure!! We're celebrating the end of the story with a field trip to Croghan Free Library. A special thanks to all who made this journey possible...
Dennis bought the mine because the man fooled him into thinking it was valuable. He tried to get rich quick and lost his money!
Anna, Tommy and Jake don't really become a family, but they become two very close families, don't they? And that's what the story was about, so that's pretty much the end.
(Look at some of the other comments -- especially in Chapter Two -- to find out why I wrote this story.)
I think that, by the time the bad guy figured out that there wasn't any silver ore in his mine, he probably didn't want to bother with Dennis anymore. For one thing, he knows that Dennis has figured out that he's a thief, so he can't cheat him again. And, for another, usually these kinds of con artists just go find someone else to fool. Unfortunately, there are plenty of people in the world who want to get rich quick and don't know when they're being cheated. Cheating Dennis a second time might be hard, but finding a new fool would be easy!

What gave you the idea of writing the serial story Anna's Story? Also, what gave you the idea of putting it in the newspaper?
