Mike Peterson is the author of "Tommy and the Guttersnipe" and other serialized newspaper stories. He is also a newspaper editor and has been a reporter and columnist, as well as a magazine writer, radio talkshow host and advertising copywriter.
Let me try to answer some of these questions. First, I didn't have Anna and Jake's birth father in the story because he was gone before the story begins, and nobody knows where he went. And he wasn't a very pleasant character anyway, right? The story came from reading other fiction about homeless and poor kids in New York City that was written back then. Yes, it was an interesting time period. I wanted to make a modern version for modern kids, to help them understand that part of history. And would I like to do more with those families? I'm not sure. I guess we'll have to wait and see!
Tanner -- I wasn't sure the families would get together for Christmas, because Irish and French-Canadians have different traditions for that holiday. But they both enjoy New Years, and so that seemed like a good time for them to take some time off from work and enjoy each other's company. Braedon -- I guess you'll have to wait and see. And so will I, because I don't know!
My favorite chapter is the last one because everyone is happy and most of their problems are solved (except that the LaRocques have to have a talk with Anna about teaching, don't they?)
I don't really have a favorite character because I know them all so well. And I enjoyed writing this story very much.
Anna and Jake told their parents about them being brother and sister. They just didn't do it right away because they weren't sure how to tell them without everyone thinking they didn't appreciate being adopted. But, of course, it turned out just fine, because they could still see each other a lot and their families became close friends.
Danielle -- read it again and I think you'll know why I called it a new century! And, Ryan, I called it "Anna's Story" because it was her story! We thought about some different names, but that one seemed the simplest and it is certainly accurate, plus it doesn't give away any surprises.
Chapter Eight was probably the hardest to write because I had to explain how they managed to cheat the cheater and get him to give back the money, and I wasn't sure everyone would remember the silver ore from Chapter One. And, since all the chapters are the same length, I couldn't use a lot of extra words.
And the names were just names that Irish and French-Canadian and German people might have had back in those days. Except that my great-grandmother's name was McMahon, and she had a brother named Thomas and a sister named Rose. The rest are all made up.
I'm probably done writing about Tommy and Jake and Anna. I hope they all become successful adults, but I think they all got good starts, so now it's up to them!
My qustion is why did you not include Anna and Jake's actual father in the story?
